The Internet has been taking the Coen Brothers very, very seriously lately, myself included, analyzing scenes from No Country for Old Men shot by shot and asking over and over again whether they'll win the Oscar in February. With this dark film on everyone's minds, it's easy to forget not only that No Country has its moments of humor ("What'll we tell them to look for? A man who has recently drunk milk?"), but the Coens are pretty darn funny on their own.
So, because it's Friday, and because my editor Kevin is too busy getting the issue to print to edit a really long blog post, and because I came across this video on the wonderful blog FourFour, here's some selected bits of the DVD commentary for Blood Simple, the Coens' first feature. It's ostensibly by Kenneth Loring, from the film restoration company Forever Young Films. Actually, it's written and maybe even performed by the Coens themselves, and is a hilarious send-up of both DVD commentary as a concept and their own film. It's a great reminder that the Coens don't take themselves nearly as seriously as the rest of us do, and even brilliant filmmakers can laugh at themselves. It also makes me really want to watch Blood Simple again, though I worry it will pale in comparison to No Country.
Happy Friday!
