Today's Film News: Everybody Onto The Ice!

By Katey Rich

LostplanetRumor has it that a potential sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D would be a visit to the lost city of Atlantis, but before we get there there's a lost planet to tackle. Warner Bros. will adapt the hit video game Lost Planet, reports Variety, about an expedition to a faraway, icy world. David Hayter, who wrote next spring's Watchmen, will pen the screenplay.

This Hollywood Reporter item refers to Thomas Ian Nicholas as an actor who made a name for himself in the American Pie franchise, but children of the early '90s remember him fondly as the star of throwaway movies like Rookie of the Year and A Kid in King Arthur's Court. Now Nicholas will be getting yet another chance at stardom in Fading of the Cries, the directorial debut of Brian Metcalf. Nicholas will play a young man who defends his town with the help of a magical sword... perhaps like King Arthur's sword? Interesting tie-in there, folks.

Jesuschristsuperstar Variety is reporting that Wanted producer Mark Platt has renewed his contract at Universal, and he won't just be getting to work on the sequel to his successful action movie. His Mark Platt Prods. is also looking at a remake of the 1973 musical Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as the first movie version of the huge Broadway hit Wicked. I'm all for modern takes on classic musicals, but are you ready to see Jesus shooting a curving bullet?

And finally, Sony's animation department is getting in on the 3D business, with 2010's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs now scheduled to be released in stereoscopic 3D.  Bob Osher, president of the studio's digital production division, told The Hollywood Reporter "The story ia about 'food weather,' and so food falling from the sky lends itself so well to 3-D." Get ready to hear a lot of delighted "Eeeeewwwws!" from children worldwide.
