Today's Film News: Two Fannings Gone for the Price Of One

By Katey Rich

Fanning It looks like Dakota Fanning has more pull in the industry than we ever imagined. She and her sister Elle have abruptly pulled out of My Sister's Keeper, in which Elle would play a girl who sues to emancipate herself from her parents after she is conceived as a genetic match for her older, ailing sister. Sources told Variety that Dakota balked at having to shave her head for her role as a girl with cancer. Abigail Breslin, the Little Miss Sunshine Oscar nominee, will replace Elle, and Sofia Vassilieva ("Medium") will take Dakota's role. Cameron Diaz is still set to star as the girls' mother, a lawyer who must defend herself in court against her daughter.

Focus specialty division Rogue Pictures has greenlit 25/8, horror icon Wes Craven's first original script since 1994. Craven will also direct the project, about a serial killer who turns up 15 years after his "death" to kill the seven children who were born on that night. Of course, those children are now teenagers, which will give them plenty of opportunities to have sex and make bad decisions before being mowed down by the killer. Craven also confirmed for Variety that he would have nothing to do with the planned Nightmare on Elm Street remake at New Line, which is being handled by Michael Bay of all people: "My baby has fallen into the hands of others, and what can I say but wish them luck."

Broken4_web_ Broken Flowers' Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton are back together with director Jim Jarmusch, joining the cast of the upcoming The Limits of Control. Gael Garcia Bernal has also joined the production, a thriller set in Spain. The Hollywood Reporter reports rumors of a number of guest appearances, from Javier Bardem to Zhang Ziyi-- not surprising, given who Jarmusch has snagged to work with him in the past. The article debunks the rumor that Roman Polanski would stop by, which is really a shame-- after seeing him slice Jack Nicholson's nose in Chinatown for the first time recently, I'm anxious to see the guy back on the screen.

Not exactly news, but more interesting than all the "The strike is over, thank the Lord!" articles out there: Nicolas Cage is suing Kathleen Turner, thanks to allegations she made about him in her upcoming autobiography, Send Yourself Roses. According to not entirely reliable sources, the book, which hits stores this week, claims that Cage caused trouble on the set of Peggy Sue Got Married, getting arrested for DUIs and for stealing a dog. "He'd come across a Chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket," Turner allegedly wrote. I'd honestly call it a joke between friends if Cage weren't, well, suing. Either way, it makes for some nice publicity.
