Weekend Roundup: Golden Girls And Boys

By Katey Rich

Hannah Montana may have stuck around for a surprise second weekend, but the tween superstar couldn't hang on to her top spot in the box office. That prize went to Fool's Gold, the romantic adventure comedy that was panned by critics but offered up the unbeatable combination of Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughey and beautiful beaches. The comedy, which also had the widest release of the weekend, took home $22 million, solidly beating out second-place contender Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, which netted $17 million total.

Hannah settled for third place and $10 million, in what is intended to be the 3D concert movie's last weekend in release. The 60% drop wasn't entirely unexpected, given that fans had been told over and over that the film would be a one-week engagement and rushed out at the first opportunity to see it.

The three other wide-ish releases of the weekend didn't crack the top 20, though one performed reasonably well for its release. In Bruges, in 28 theatres, managed a substantial $16,000 per theatre average for a take of $471,000. It came in just behind Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show, which grossed just slightly more from nearly 1,000 screens. Ouch. But that's not nearly as dismal as the performance of Paris Hilton's The Hottie and the Nottie, which had a wretched $225 per-theatre average. That's about 20 people who paid to see this movie at each location. The underperformance of this movie, which was more critically reviled than anything since Norbit, is enough to give me faith in humanity on this cold Monday morning.

Holdovers filled out the rest of the top ten, starting with the Jessica Alba horror thriller The Eye, down 45% and settling for fourth place with $6.6 million. Juno is staying strong through awards season, sticking around in fifth place with $5.7 million. It just edged out another female-centric comedy, 27 Dresses, which dropped from third to sixth place in its fourth weekend. The Katherine Heigl romantic comedy made $5.7 million to add to its $65 million total.

The Bucket List, a movie that I keep forgetting exists, held steady at #7 with $5.3 million. Male-centric fare came next, with Rambo ($4.1 million) in eighth place and Meet the Spartans ($4 million) in ninth place. There Will Be Blood once again rounded out the top ten, with $4 million this week. Though the Oscar contender added 100 theatres, its gross fell about 10%, indicating the expansion for this one may be finished, at least until the Oscar ceremony.

Check out the full top 20 after the jump, courtesy of Box Office Mojo. No Country for Old Men is showing remarkable staying power since its post-Oscar nominations re-release, coming in at #13 this week. It's made nearly $58 million at this point, significantly less than fellow Best Picture contender Juno but substantial nonetheless. Michael Clayton hasn't managed to find the same fortune in its Academy run, coming in at #18 this week and already shedding theatres. Atonement is doing the same, though it's slightly ahead at #15. Finishing up the top 20 is U2 3D, which didn't crack $1 million over the weekend but is pulling nearly the same per-theatre average as Hannah Montana. Not bad for a bunch of middle-aged Irish guys.
