Today's Film News: Nicolas Cage Huntin' Down A Dream

By Katey Rich

Nationatreasurebooksecre_2 If you're going off of Nicolas Cage's film roles in the last year, he's good at two things: solving mysteries thanks to time travel (Next), and finding treasure (National Treasure: Book of Secrets). So it's no surprise that Knowing, his next project, combines both of those skills. The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Rose Byrne (Sunshine, Marie Antoinette) will join Cage in the thriller, in which Byrne will play the daughter of a woman who prophesized the dates of future events and buried them in a time capsule. Cage discovers the capsule (treasure hunt!) and helps Byrne remember other events from her childhood. Hey, I never told you this plot would be simple.

Alison Lohman is nearly ten years older than Ellen Page, but she seems like a good replacement for the Juno star in Drag Me to Hell, Sam Raimi's upcoming horror project. Variety reports that Lohman will take over the role, after Page dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Lohman isn't exactly the same buzzworthy name as Page, but she's had a solid career up to this point, and could probably use the exposure more than Page, who's running the risk of overexposure. So, see, everyone wins!

Bobmarley_2You may think we're running out of musicians with tempestuous personal lives to make biopics about, but hey, we've still got Bob Marley! The Weinstein Company will adapt the book No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley, by Marley's widow Rita, as a feature for a 2009 release. This is the first biopic that Marley has approved, but not the only movie about Bob Marley in the pipeline; Martin Scorsese announced a few weeks ago that he'll be making a documentary about the singer, set for release in 2010.

BeautifulAnd finally, the book-of-the-moment Beautiful Children, about hustlers in Las Vegas, has been optioned by Warner Bros. Executive producers Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa also shepherded the adaptation of Tom Perrotta's novel Little Children, and are currently working on another Perrotta adaptation, The Abstinence Teacher. Variety reports that Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, Munich) may write the screenplay.
