Today's Film News: More Disney And Pixar Comin' At Ya!

By Katey Rich

WalleWhen it comes down to it, what Disney is best at is putting on a show. They seemed to prove it last night, when they unveiled their slate for the next five years (why wasn't I invited??) with help from Randy Newman, Anika Noni Rose, 30 minutes of WALL-E and, of course, Pixar/Disney Animation head John Lasseter decked out in a Hawaiian shirt. More on the details later, but expect to see a lot more Pixar, at least one more 2D animated movie before the entire technique goes bust, and a sequel to Cars. Variety has the full details if you just can't wait for our scintillating input.

Universal has picked up a spec script for what, based on the title alone, sounds like the most insane sci-fi movie ever made. Earth vs. Moon has a plot that's being kept under wraps, but I'm inferring from the title that it will be beyond over-the-top. I mean, The Hollywood Reporter writes that the screenwriters, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, are responsible for a show called "The Joe Schmoe Show" on Spike TV as well as the Sony project Zombieland. These are guys who know their way around a title, for sure; let's just see if they can live up to the promise.

17424maguirel46wgsagk1Women across the country were depressed by Lori Gottlieb's article in The Atlantic Monthly, titled "Marry Him! The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough." Now Tobey Maguire will make sure that even more people get the disheartening message, as he plans to produce Gottlieb's upcoming book on the subject. Variety writes that Warner Independent will distribute the film, which will do its best to shatter even the youngest girl's delusion that she'll ever be able to find a man she truly loves. Honestly, was a movie called He's Just Not That Into You not depressing enough?

And finally, Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci have already checked in at Love Ranch, but Zooey Deschanel and Chloe Sevigny are moving into what might be the polar opposite. The two will star in Divorce Ranch, about a spot in Nevada just after World War II that offered quickie divorces. Sevigny plays an actress aiming for a wedding to a new divorc, while Deschanel plays her assistant. The Reporter writes that Michael Lindsay-Hogg, a veteran TV movie director, will helm Divorce Ranch.
