This isn't exactly news, but it sure is exciting: The first trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is up on Yahoo! Movies, giving us our first chance in nearly 20 years to see Indy escape certain death and whip out the one-liners with the greatest of ease. The old-fashioned, sepia-toned style is back, along with the rousing score, but look closely and you catch fresh faces Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBeouf, as well as a particular name... Roswell, New Mexico? The blogosphere has been buzzing with rumors that the new movie would involve aliens, and that brief shot is as much evidence that Indy won't just be super, he'll be supernatural.
Just a day after the writers' strike officially ended, the major studios are seizing the opportunity to take a deep breath and get things back in order. At Paramount this involves reshuffling a good number of their big-deal movies, including the granddaddy of them all, Star Trek. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Trek will be pushed from a Christmas Day opening this year to May 8 of next year, an arguably better tentpole date to kick off the summer. A number of other smaller releases have been shuffled as well: Tropic Thunder has been delayed from July to August of this summer, while Renee Zellweger's Case 39 has been pushed from August to next year (for a project that's already been delayed several times, that's not an especially good sign). Other studios will probably follow suit, which means a lot of changes to the summer preview I just finished for the magazine. No rest for the weary!
Not much casting news today, but a whole slew of mid-90s stars have signed up for the indie comedy Baby on Board. Heather Graham! Jerry O'Connell! Ian Ziering! Lara Flynn Boyle! They're all here in the comedy about a couple whose lives are thrown into disarray thanks to an unplanned pregnancy. Yeah, it looks like Juno fever has spread, and unplanned pregnancies are replacing the Internet as the new deus ex machina to get the ball rolling on romantic comedies. Brian Herzlinger (My Date With Drew) is writing and directing.
And finally, "The Office" regular Rashida Jones (a.k.a. Karen) is moving up in motion pictures, set to co-star in I Love You Man with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel as well as in Chilled in Miami with Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr. She's simply one of any number of "Office" stars to co-star with Rudd and the rest of the Judd Apatow gang, including Jenna Fischer (Walk Hard), Mindy Kaling (The 40-Year Old Virgin) and, of course, Steve Carell.
OK, I couldn't resist. Here's the Indy trailer in all its glory. Enjoy!
