Today's Film News: Strike Up The Band!

By Katey Rich

The strike is over! Both of the trades have extensive coverage of the aftermath, from when your favorite TV shows will come back (welcome back, "The Office"!) to the overall cost of the strike. Variety has the full details of the deal, which include the ever-important residuals for writers whose work is downloaded or streamed online. Both trades bring up the ultimate question: Was it worth it? That's probably an answer that can only come in the next few weeks, once things finally start getting back to normal.

"Veronica Mars" alum and star of the upcoming Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Kristen Bell is taking on another romantic comedy role, as the lead in Disney's When in Rome. The Hollywood Reporter says that Bell will play a love-starved New Yorker who steals enchanted coins from a fountain in Rome, only to find a band of aggressive suitors waiting for her when she comes home-- the people whose coins she stole. Mark Steven Johnson (Ghost Rider), not exactly known for his romantic comedies, will direct.

Ellen Page has taken on more roles than anyone can keep track of since she became the girl of the moment thanks to Juno. Now she's teaming up with another indie stalwart-turned-mainstream-success story, Sam Raimi: The Spider-Man director has cast Page in the lead of Drag Me To Hell, a horror thriller about a supernatural curse. Universal is distributing the film, which is set to begin shooting in March.

Michelle Pfeiffer seems to be continuing last year's mini-comeback, preparing to star in the Miramax drama Cheri. She'll play a role that seems tailor-made for her, a stunning older woman who embarks on an affair with a wealthy young man. Christopher Hampton (Atonement) wrote the script based on the French-language novel by Colette, and Stephen Frears (The Queen) will direct.
