Writers Guild falls for comedies

Normally comedies are cast aside during awards season. Serious dramas with messages usually win out over laughs. But getting audiences to laugh is harder than it looks. This year, the Writers Guild exclusively nominated comedies in its Original Screenplay category. Even many of the Adapted Win winScreenplay films had plenty of laughs. The Descendants is a bittersweet comedy-drama, The Help mixed hearty laughs with serious moments. Moneyball had some great comedic moments, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo some sick & twisted ones.



Original Screenplay Nominees: 50/50, written by Will Reiser; Bridesmaids, written by Annie Mumolo & Kristen Wiig; Midnight in Paris, written by Woody Allen; Win Win, Screenplay by Tom McCarthy (story by Tom McCarthy & Joe Tiboni); and Young Adult, written by Diablo Cody.



What I like most about this category is the underdog factor. Midnight in Paris and Bridesmaids were both the litte films that surprised with overwhelming returns week after week after week. 50/50 and Win Win released earlier in the year with good critical reviews but neither did spectacularly at the box office. Young Adult just opened in December with an awards push but the wickedly funny film has only generated moderate returns--so far.

Although all these films have comedic elements, a win for Payne for The Descendants would be a back-to-back comedy lock. His style of film offers the most satisfying kind of comedy. They have a strong, character-driven narrative, and the laughs are just a bonus along the way. The very best movies make you laugh and cry, and the cancer comedy 50/50, The Descendants, and The Help all nearly fulfilled that purpose for me (at least some rising tears, if not actual crying), moving from extreme highs and lows. None of these movies--even the sometimes gross-out humor of Bridesmaids--kept to the lowest common denominator of humor, and that's the reason these comedies were rewarded by the Writers Guild.

Interpreting the Golden Globe nominations

This year's Golden Globe nominations confirmed that The Artist will not be sidelined solely because it's a black-and-white silent. Indeed, I think the movie's antiquated format actually works in its favor. Audiences are delighted to find that they're not bored, but charmed. The Artist is very audience-accessible. It's also rife with the warm-fuzzies that Academy voters in particular love, making me think The artist berenice bejoit will do similarly well once the Oscar nominations come out.



Two movies that have barely screened for critics failed to grab many nominations. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo only got two nominations, one for Rooney Mara in the Best Actress category, and one for Best Musical Score. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close scored a shocking zero nominations. Most critics (perhaps including the foreign press?) haven't seen the Dec. 28 release yet. Is it a stinker?



I liked seeing 50/50 grab a couple nominations. I thought the cancer drama-comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen worked quite well. It doesn't have the lasting resonance I look for in an out-of-the-park movie, but it's rare that a low-budget comedy--marketed with lots of medical marijuana jokes--grabs the attention of critical movers-and-shakers.



The Help, too, has been long expected to make a strong showing in awards season, and its five The help womennominations attest that this was one of the best movies an adult could have seen this summer. The historical drama was nominated in the drama category, despite its many lighter moments--enough to have placed it in the comedy section if that field was more of a lock. Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain all earned acting nominations, with the latter two in the supporting category.



I think Young Adult deserved more than its single nomination for Charlize Theron as Best Actress. Maybe it could have earned more votes if the movie's heroine followed a path to redemption, instead of ending up the same. The Descendants, which also features a hero in a time with crisis, fared better. It earned five nominations, tying with The Help with the second-highest number.



In general, this year has been a inconclusive one for awards-seeking films. There is no single movie ending up with double-digit nominations--and I doubt there will be. There's a flip side to this, at least in critical roundups. I've been more interested in which small independent movies made "top" lists (like NY Times' and Slate's) and less interested in which of the mostly B+/A- mainstream movies ended up in the running. There are many films to check out this awards season, but no one film will generate all the noise. And that might be a good thing.

Golden Globe nominations: A whole lot of 'Whaaat?'

So maybe this hasn't been the strongest year for movies. But does that really justify the Hollywood Foreign Press nominating the flop The Tourist in three categories? When I outlined the film's dismal box-office prospects the Friday it opened, I wondered if Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp would be enough The tourist angelina jolie to save the film. Well, it earned just $17 million opening weekend, but the star wattage of Jolie and Depp was enough to blind the Foreign Press Association to its negative reception stateside. I imagine the dialogue going something like this--"We need Depp and Jolie on the red carpet--we can't disappoint the people running E!'s Red Carpet show!" How big of a joke were The Tourist's nominations? They "drew audible laughter from the crowd of press and publicists assembled at the Beverly Hilton for the pre-dawn announcement," according to THR.



The other big "What" came from the HFPA's total shut-out of The Coen Brothers' True Grit. I don't see the movie until tomorrow, but it's currently tracking at 93% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. The Tourist? 20%.



Another big shut-out, but one that will receive less attention, was Sofia Coppola's Somewhere, which received zero nominations. Perhaps they didn't like the movie's jabs at press conferences and foreign awards shows? Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning both turned in solid performances, but at the very least a writing or directing nomination was deserved. Never Let Me Go didn't receive any nominations (though it was better than many nominated films), but that's less of a surprise as its early, October release Blue valentine love shows that Fox Searchlight wasn't putting too much faith in it for awards season.



The Hollywood Foreign Press did make a couple of good decisions. It nominated Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine, one of the best movies I've seen all year. Jennifer Lawrence also got a nod for Winter's Bone, an Ozarks drama that's quietly powerful. But really, a lot of these nominations are a joke. The silver lining? The star power will make for an entertaining broadcast, and smart people betting on winners in awards pools may just get lucky.

Golden Globe nominations a mixed bag for female directors

Today the Golden Globe Nominations were announced, and, as usual, there weren't quite enough nominations to cover all the great performances (in particular, Nicolas Cage's crazy-amazing performance in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans). Inspired by New York Times critic Manohla Kathryn bigelow the hurt locker Dargis' recentdocumentation of the lack of female directors in Hollywood, particularly for studio films, I also decided to tally up the nominations for female-directed movies. Results and analysis follow.

The Takeaways

* Golden Globes reward more female directors, but this is because its picture and acting nominations are genre-specific: "Best Drama" and "Best Comedy/Musical." More females direct in the latter category, allowing them to rack up more nominations. When it comes to the Oscars, however, the majority of the nominees usually come from the more prestigious "Drama" category.

*Of the twenty films nominated for a form of Best Picture (Drama, Comedy/Musical, Animated, Foreign Language), three were directed by a female. Kathryn Bigelow recieved a nomination in the Drama category, and Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers were nominated in the Comedy/Musical category. This is slightly higher than the 60 females out of 600 directors (10%) that Dargis figured for 2009, but given the small sample size, this isn't significant.

*Zero of the ten "Best Actor" nominees were directed by females. Four of the ten "Best Actor" nominees were directed by females, including two directors not nominated in the "Best Picture" categories. Sandra Bullock was nominated for her performance in Anne Fletcher's The Proposal and Carey Mulligan for Lone Scherfig's An Education. This correlation is difficult to judge, but it could reflect a well-known Hollywood bias that female directors are only offered women's films.

*One female, Kathryn Bigelow, was nominated for "Best Director." She's running against her ex-husband, James Cameron (Avatar).

Bigelow, the sole director to receive a nomination for "Best Director," was highlighted by Dargis as an example of Hollywood's unequal treatment of female directors. Before Hurt Locker, she hadn't directed a film since 2002.

Dargis compares her to director Michael Mann, who was in a similar

standing to her at the time. Both directed films (Ali and K19: The Widowmaker, respectively) in the early aughts that underperformed.

Dargis writes, "What

did a $22 million difference in box office mean for the directors

of "Ali" and "K-19"? Well, Ms. Bigelow didn't direct another feature

until 2007, when she began "The Hurt Locker," a thriller about a bomb

squad in Iraq that was bankrolled by a French company and is said to

cost under $20 million." Mann, by comparison,

directed three big-budget movies, and produced several more--all a mix

of hits (Collateral) and misses (Miami Vice). She goes on to say,

"I

imagine there are a host of reasons why Mr. Mann has been able to

persuade executives to keep writing such large checks. He's a dazzling

innovator, and big stars keep flocking to his side, despite his

reputation for difficulty. But Ms. Bigelow is one of the greatest

action directors working today, and it's hard not to wonder why failure

at the box office doesn't translate the same for the two sexes."

Dargis seems to have drawn the conclusion that women are held to higher standards than men, and have to be that much better in this position in order to succeed.

The other key to equality in film direction is making projects open to both

male and female directors. Lee Daniels directed a great film (Precious) with a female cast, just as Kathryn Bigelow has distinguished herself for her "testosterone" action film. Besides Bigelow, Scherfig (An Education) and Jane Campion (Bright Star) have been mentioned as the standout directors of the year, but their films' lack of nominations could push them out of the running. Bigelow's nomination for The Hurt Locker makes her chance of being nominated for Best Director at the Oscars that much more likely.

Studios stacking the deck to create 5 nominees for Best Animated Feature

This year will be the ninth year of the Motion Picture Academy's "Best Animated Feature" category. Between computer animation, 3D premiums, and the incredible quality of films produced by studios like Pixar, the field will be as competitive as ever this year. Because of the volume of submissions this year, the Academy will likely boost the number of nominees from three to five. The bump in nominees happened once before, in 2002, and occurs when the number of eligible films is greater than 16. To be eligible, the movie must have a qualifying release and an Academy-produced average score of 7.5 (but on the odd scale of 6-10).

The 20 submitted features, along with my predictions, are below. The locks for nominations are Coraline oscar nomination bolded and underlined. Films with strong chances of being nominated are bolded.



  • Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel: The first one made a surprising amount of money, though it did not secure a nomination. Don't count on the squeakquel receiving one either.


  • Astro Boy: Without making a splash at the box office, a critical assent would come as a surprise.


  • Battle for Terra: A clunker several years in the making. My guess to be excluded from the running.


  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: The crowd-pleaser could surprise with a nomination


  • Coraline: A lock for a nomination. Incredible story, visuals, and stop-motion technique. Read the review here.


  • Disney's A Christmas Carol: Potential nominee, which would be a first for a film using director Robert Zemeckis' performance-capture technique.


  • The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer: A straight-to-DVD film given a qualifying run to boost the amount of eligible films.


  • Fantastic Mr. Fox: Potential nominee. Wes Anderson received an Oscar nomination in 2001 for his screenplay of The Royal Tenenbaums.


  • Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs: The first Ice Age was nominated, but the sequel was not. The third probably won't either, despite its status as the third highest-grossing film in international box-office history..


  • Mary and Max: This adult indie film has Philip Seymour Hoffman and the winners of an Oscar-winning short behind it, but it might be too low-profile.


  • The Missing Lynx: a small, Spanish film unlikely to receive a nod.


  • Monsters vs. Aliens: If Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is nomination-worthy, then so is this film.


  • 9: An adult-oriented movie that could receive a nomination


  • Planet 51: More likely to be a box-office winner than nominee.


  • Ponyo: Disney-released Spirited Away, an anime film, won in 2002, and Howl's Moving Castle was nominated in 2005. Both were directed by Hayao Miyazaki. But some felt Ponyo fell flat.


  • The Princess and the Frog: If this movie resonates with viewers and Oscar voters, I predict it will be nominated.


  • The Secret of Kells: The trailer animation looks uneven and not up to snuff.


  • Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure: Disney's straight-to-DVD release given a qualifying run to boost the chance on the nominees going to five.


  • A Town Called Panic: The trailer looks cute, but only Sony Pictures Classics (The Triplets of Belleville and Persepolis) and the aforementioned Miyazaki films have has ever successfully secured a nomination for a foreign animated film.


  • Up: a lock for nomination, and in all likelihood the winner. Read the rave review here.Up planes old man oscar nomination




Having an Academy-nominated film can certainly help boost DVD sales and rentals from inquisitive Oscar ceremony viewers (although with the DVD market tanking, maybe not so much). But this year, Up seems like a lock on the Animated Feature category. Press attention could be drawn away from the category as a whole, making nominee status not as valuable. Coraline, to me, is the only likely upset. Plus, with the Academy skewing older, the hero of Up, the old man, is one of their own. What's not to love? Even with five nominees, Pixar shows all signs of continuing their winning streak.

MTV Movie Awards: The teen audience speaks

Just when you thought awards season was over, MTV has announced the nominees for its Movie Awards. Viewers can watch clips and vote on the nominees (with the exception of Best Movie) until Mtv movie awards May 27th. Awards favorites like Slumdog Millionaire show up in several categories, including a nomination for "Best WTF Moment," "Jumping in the Poop Shed."

Besides the gross-out moments nominated for "Best WTF Moment"--I think Slumdog will have tough competition alongside Tropic Thunder's "Tasting Decapitated Head," or the "Curved Bullet Kill" from Wanted, there's also the perennially popular "Best Kiss" category.

I personally enjoyed watching all the nominated kisses from Milk, Slumdog Millionaire, Wanted, Twilight, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, and I Love You, Man. It's definitely a sign of the times that there's a gay kiss played for love and one for laughs running against each other.

While evaluating clips, instead of movies as a whole, seems derivative, looking at just one scene can be a surprisingly accurate indicator of quality. Does the clip remind you of another scene in the movie, or does it seem dead, not really something that was built up to or referenced after? Can it stand on its own? The kiss in Slumdog Millionaire, for example, cuts to a flashback during the slow-motion liplock, giving it a checkmark in the standalone category. Wanted's kiss uses slow motion and subjective use of sound, as well as a perfectly timed cut to the jealous ex-girlfriend watching James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie. Milk's makes you think of the relationship between Sean Penn and James Franco that occurs after the kiss, and Twilight--well, Twilight uses special effects to propel Robert Pattinson against a wall as he tries to contain his advances, but the sequence has little emotion in itself, reminding me why it didn't really appeal beyond fans of the book.

The MTV nominations also reveal the most popular teen movies of the year: Twilight, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Hannah Montana: The Movie, and Pineapple Express. Star Anne Hathaway appears popular, showing up for Bride Wars and Get Smart, as did Anna Faris for House Bunny. While I'm sure few people will be biting their fingernails during the May 31st broadcast, MTV's always-entertaining choice of nominees, and a presentation that I'm sure will include the teen equivalent of sliming onstage (the hallmark of the Nickelodeon awards) should keep its audience happy.

DGA nominations foreshadowing Oscar nods?

Oscar detectives have a new lead: the Directors Guild and the Producers Guild announced their Oscar statuette 1

nominations for Best Picture. They matched, five for five. Both guilds nominated The Dark Knight, Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire, Milk, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for their top films. My editor Kevin Lally, for one, thinks they're right on, and that these films represent the likely Academy selections this year. But will Oscar voters agree?

Those in the Academy still have four days to cast their ballot for the nominees--January 12th. Will they be influenced by the recognition these five films have already received, and add a dark horse (Slumdog Millionaire) to their nominations? Will those reluctant to cast a ballot for a comic book film change their mind?

The DGA is known for correctly predicting the Best Director award, and the Risky Business Blog points out that the demographics, and tastes, of the DGA closely align with that of the Academy, making the rest of their nominations (including Best Picture) harbingers of the Academy's top five. From a budget/release pattern perspective, the five films are preternaturally balanced: two are big-budgeted, wide releases, one (Slumdog) has followed a specialty-to-moderate release pattern, with Milk coming up just behind. Frost/Nixon, with the smallest theatrical release, is holding up last place. Not having seen it myself, its small scope (what better place to watch a film about a TV interview than a TV, right?) makes it seem like the kind of film that will receive heavy DVD rentals after generating some awards publicity.

Aside from The Dark Knight, all five of these films have a historical and/or lifespan focus--perhaps appealing to older voters? While I appreciate grand and historical films as much as the next person, the 70's era settings of Milk and Frost/Nixon relive events many Academy voters were there to experience. This is also why Doubt, set the year after JFK's assassination (1964), might still have a chance.

The Academy will release its nominations in two weeks--until then, we'll continue to speculate.

Spirit Awards in a downbeat mood

The Independent Spirit Awards announced their nominees this morning.  Unlike last year, which was swept by crossover blockbuster Juno both in terms of nominations and awards, three films tied for most Ballastfilm
nominations, with Rachel Getting Married, Ballast, and Frozen River each receiving six nominations, including the Best Feature nod.



The two other Best Feature nominees, Wendy and Lucy and The Wrestler, have only been seen on the festival circuit.(Could these movies' late releases have impacted the volume of their nominations?)  Wendy and Lucy will play at NYC's Film Forum December 10th-23rd, and The Wrestler, angling for a Best Actor nomination for Mickey Rourke, will release on December 19th.  While narrowing down the top five Independent films can be a trial each year, The Visitor and Milk, each nominated in other categories besides Best Feature, could easily have held their own among the top features, at least if FJI's Executive Editor Kevin Lally had anything to do the selections.



Of the five nominees for Best Feature, I can only speak to Rachel Getting Married and Wendy and Lucy (at least until I see The Wrestler next week).  Depending on your taste, "meandering" can either compliment or insult Rachel Getting Married and its long musical and dance sequences.  The quiet spiral of despair and destitution of Wendy and Lucy can be painful to watch, though director Kelly Reichardt wisely gives the audience moments to rest.  Frozen River, the story of two trapped women smuggling immigrants to make ends meet, boasts a "grasp of time, place and state of mind and economy [that] is firm and unforgettable."  Ballast also focuses on a rural landscape where "poverty seems to be endemic, drug dealing rampant, and possibilities extremely limited."  Indeed, of the five films, Rachel Getting Married is the black sheep, its addict a product of an upper-middle-class, suburban home, and theChopshop2
general mood far from hopeless.



While not nominated for Best Feature, I particularly liked Chop Shop, which received nominations for Best Director and Best Cinematography.  There's nothing worse than an earnest low-budget film marred by terrible image quality, but Chop Shop plays like a collection of photographs, its depiction of an urban slum a bleaker and more static version of Slumdog Millionaire's.
